I agree with many of the reviewers here, this grinder does a nice job and is quieter than most grinders of this type that I have used. The only negative thing about this grinder is its poor attempt at cable management. The bottom of this grinder extends so you can wrap the cord on an internal spool. Once the cable is wrap onto the spool you can, in theory, push the spool back into the bottom of the unit. This spool mechanism is very flimsy and works about half the time. You have to be very careful about how you wrap the cord so the spool can be pushed back in. Otherwise the grinder will sit a bit caddywompus as the spool mechanism creates an uneven base. This grinder is great for french press, drip coffee makers and my favorite the AeroPress. I think most would be unsatisfied with this grinder in hopes of making espresso.

I purchased this grinder when I moved back to the US, as my old version was 220V, and wouldn't work here. We are heavy coffee drinkers, and this grinder just works great for us. Shorter grind times give coarser grinds for the french press, long grind time for a fine grind for the espresso machine. The best feature of this grinder, is it's small space saving design. It also seems a tad bit quieter than other grinders that I've used.

I've only tried making soymilk, and think the recipe I use may even come from an Amazon reviewer. Very simple: soak 1/3-1/2 cup of soybeans overnight in the fridge (or longer-- I've done this for up to 3 days, with a lid on), rinse and drain the beans and attach to the blade part, and fill the machine up to the top line with filtered water. It's not very hard to clean, and really the only pain in the butt is to make sure you scald your equipment with hot water (including the container in which you store your soymilk) to help keep it fresh and clean. I bought a used machine and the folks couldn't have been nicer. Recommended, especially since soymilk can be expensive over time.

I've been using my Soyabella for over four months, and, overall, I'm glad to have it. It's easy and convenient to use, and it takes only about 15 minutes. However, it's (briefly) very loud, and cleaning it isn't as easy as using it. Although the recommendation is to clean it promptly after use, it's too hot to handle at first. All parts must be washed by hand, and it's tricky to keep the plug-in place for the cord dry. As for the finished product, it has a beanier flavor and is not as creamy as Silk Soymilk (which contains carrageenan), and it contains a grainy sludge that sinks to the bottom of cup or pitcher. I was filtering out this residue at first, with cheese cloth and a fine sieve, but that procedure was slow and bothersome. Now I'm used to this sediment (but I wouldn't serve it to company).

I've had this for almost a year - I've used it to make soymilk, almond milk, and to grind flax seeds. It's solid, easy to use, works quite well at everything I've tried on it, and it's great to know what's in my milk & to be able to cut down on the waste involved in packaging, shipping, and processing store-bought soymilks. There is a beanier taste to home-made soymilks that takes some getting used to, which was disappointing at first, but I've gotten used to it.

This grinder is powerful for such a small one. If you press the button repeatedly to give it a pulse action, you will be able to grind your beans finer. I recommend giving it a tap (tap the top of the grinder while the platic top is still on)between every 10 pulses to release the oily grinds from the walls to maximize grinding, then hold button for 10 seconds at the end. This made my coffee perfect (althought with any grinder you'll find the occassional lump), and it was very flavorful. I used the Cafe Altura Organic beans in Dark Roast. VERY SMOOTH.

Dear Coffee Comrades . . . . I'm very pleased with the grinding action of the Bodum unit.
Previously I owned a Braun blade grinder which just " hacks away " at the bean. The conical
grinding wheels of the Bodum does a perfect job of breaking & grinding the bean. Now what puzzled me from another reviewer comments, was the stray grinds that are statically charged and fly all over the place. This is a nusiance because the Bodum unit seems so well designed to prevent it - the grinding cup is shielded etc.

Well I discovered it's the beans - not the grinder's fault.

My first bag of beans were too close to the expiration date and had less moisture. Result - fly away grinds. A fresh bag of beans solved the problem. The grind made a neat pile inside the holder cup; and poured cleanly into my expresso holder.

Moreover don't put more than a few days beans in the hopper. Just a slight drop in moisture content affects the static charge on the bean.

Any coffee lover will appreciate the flavour from beans ground an instance before
brewing - the Bodum Grinder is an excellent appliance.

Only 1 flaw, but a total deal-breaker - Joesab - San Jose, Ca
The only reason not to buy this grinder is because it was specifically designed to fail prematurely. It's spelled out right there in the owner's manual. Quote from manual (grammar and spelling verbatim):

"Warning: In order to prevent the motor from overheating, do not grind more than 1 complete unit (1x40 seconds) in succession. After wait 10 Min. to let the motor cool down befor restart.

After each grinded unit (40 seconds), empty the coffee container. This prevents the motor overheating."

So, you can't safely grind more than 40 seconds without overheating motor, you must wait 10 minutes between grinds and it doesn't grind enough in 40 seconds for a 8 cup pot. You'll get about 40g in the 40 seconds, I use about 55g for a 8 cup pot. So I need to grind some, go do something for 10 minutes then come back to finish grinding?? That's insane, especially for a grinder in this price range.

If running the grinder for 40 seconds pushes it to the margin of failure, that's a poor design and it will likely fail prematurely, maybe 1-3 years. It's Not designed to last.

At this price point I 5-10 years of service for 1 pot a day is a reasonable expectation.
My Melita flat burr grinder is still working after 12 years of daily use (happily spraying dust all over my counter).

I had to return it as I refuse to shell out this kind money for something that won't last. If I have to replace it in 3 years then I'm spending more money then I would on a Kitchenaid, only I'll likely have to buy still yet another one 3 years after that.

Note that they re-designed this grinder in 2007, so any reports of it lasting 10 years are for a different grinder (I believe it had a metal housing and was better built). Still, regardless of which grinder you choose, read the 1 & 2 star reviews and look for common complaints.

Too bad, I *really* liked the grinder, it looks good and works beautifully.

pros:

- electronic timer, set it once then just press the button, timer setting remains for next time. Pressing start again will stop grinding.
- Consistent grind, although even on espresso setting it seems course (I don't make espresso)
- sturdy hopper made of polycarbonate, very durable holds 1/2 pound of beans
- sturdy grind bin also made of polycarbonate, oval shape with no corners has attached lid with lip around perimeter preventing grinds escaping while grinding.

Other than the relilability issue, no real cons, just some minor issues:

- has on/off switch in back with pointless pilot light that you can't see
- easy to accidently hit the start button when moving, should be recessed or have a small shroud around it. Use the on/off switch to prevent this.
- static is an issue, even in my 60% RH climate, but not so bad as there are no talc fine particles from grinding. Just tap the grinder to release grinds from chute and tap receptacle to empty.
- it's loud, about as loud as my old Melita flat burr grinder or a blender.

The size listed is for the box, the actual grinder dimensions are 11H x 6W x 7 1/2D. It's larger than I imagined, about 3/4 the size of my B&D coffee maker.

Cost rationalization tip:
If you think the Kitchenaid is too expensive, just calculate how much you spend on beans each year, don't those beans deserve a decent grinder? We spend over 0 per year for 1 pot a day using Costco beans. Then look at how much time you've spent agonizing over grinder reviews, how much is your time worth? Every sub 0 grinder has issues. Get the Kitchenaid and be done with shopping for grinders.

After viewing a youtube video of the Breville BCG450XL grinder, I'm fairly certain that the "guts" of that grinder are the same as the Bodum. The top burr/clip and center of hopper look identical. The sound is identical and the timer knob and start/stop switch look and operate the same. You can probably apply reviews on either grinder to the other one.

Now that I've had a few weeks to try this out, I LOVE IT! After hours of reading reviews on grinders, and wanting to stay under 0, I bought this one to use with the Bodum Chambord French Press and it works flawlessly. We have to use the lowest setting for coarse ground and it seems to do the job perfectly for French Press style. There is a time-to-grind knob (up to 40 seconds for the quantity you want to grind) that you just set and leave it once you know how much you need every morning. For 4 cups of coffee, our knob is set for around 15 seconds. Wake up, press the red button, remove the cup of fresh grounds, pour into the French Press, add the near-boiling water (from our Bodum Electric Tea Kettle) and Voila! (The only [...] is cleaning out the French Press unit).

Least messy of all - Barry E. Olson -
This is my third Bodum Burr Grinder. I bought the first one over 10 years ago after having several blade grinders. Unfortunately, I burned the first two up over the years by grinding a pound of coffee at a time and sometimes more. EVEN THOUGH THE DIRECTIONS TELL ME NOT TO DO SO. This one will be used as instructed with a fresh grind for each pot. My friends have other brands that do not drop the grinds vertically into the container and theirs routinely clog up. This one never does. It is the best non commercial grinder I have seen in operation for the money.

For complaints about the grind consistency... This is a blade grinder and blade grinders will NEVER create an extremely consistent grind throughout. If you want a consistent grind, spend the money and get a burr grinder. But after reviewing all of the burr grinders out there, you may end up with similar problems. The burr grinder I just ordered was 0... so for 5 do you want your grind that consistent? I do, but you may not.

After a few uses you will learn the grind & cup setting for making your coffee. The two different settings are wonderful.

This model can be extremely clean and looks good enough to leave out on your counter.

I have had this for almost 2 years, making a pot of coffee 5+ times a week with no problems.

Would definetly buy again if I wanted a BLADE grinder.

This is probably a fine grinder for percolator coffee but does not create a fine enough or consistent enough grind for expresso. Seriously. Do not buy it. If you put it on the espresso setting and only let it go through one cycle (as it is designed to do) your espresso will end up very weak and watery (as what you essentially have gotten is a grind consistency appropriate for percolated or drip coffee.

I have tried to grind through two cycles on a higher cup setting (8 for 2 shots and 12 for 4 shots), which helps but even with shaking in between and while grinding, you still end up with only about half of the coffee fine enough to produce dark espresso.

Some reviewers will say "what did you expect from an inexpensive blade grinder?" to which I say, I expected what the manufacturer indicated the machine could do! If it can't make espresso grind coffee then don't put it on the machine and labeling!!! Further, a blade grinder CAN do this job. I had an inexpensive blade grinder for years that I was able to make decent espresso with by shaking it a bit about halfway through the grind cycle. It eventually died or I would still be using it today instead of this machine.

I bought this to use for coffee and continued to use my old Krups grinder for spices. The Krups grinder has finally failed, after 30 years; this piece of trash died after @ 8 months. The top will no longer stay tightly closed, so it doesn't grind at all, after a couple of months where the grind was very inconsistent and a lot of partial beans were ending up in the mix. I would strongly advise against wasting money on this appliance. I'm going back for another Krups.

I've been living with this grinder for almost a year now. It still works like it did when it was new but I'm really tired of the mess it can leave after grinding, having to stand and press the grind button (no timed grinding feature) and the noise which halts any conversation within 10 feet. It was purchased with the intention of upgrading at a later date, so I knew very well that it wouldn't meet all my desires. I give it three stars because it does work for it's intended purpose- it grinds coffee rather evenly. But that's it.

I received this grinder as a Christmas gift. Overall, it's passable as an entry-level burr grinder with one important caveat...If you are an espresso drinker, stay away from this grinder. It simply cannot grind beans fine enough for a proper espresso. And you can forget about grinding fine enough for Turkish coffee. It simply cannot do it.

On the other hand, it can grind drip and press grinds perfectly well. It's quieter than my old Krups blade grinder and seems to be fairly easy to clean.

Bottom line...works fine if you don't need a large hopper and never need a fine grind.

Love this grinder. I think it's the best I've ever owned. Certainly better than those tiny ones you find at Macy's and other department stores. It's adjustable from fine (espresso), medium (automatic drip), to coarse (percolator).

It preserves the aroma and flavor by pressing the beans rather than chopping them. That is very noticeable from the very first cup you drink.

And that built-in auto-off timer is just the icing on the cake. Couldn't be happier!

I had to get a coffee grinder.

I had some Kenya coffee beans.

I had the Kenya coffee beans because I could not find any Kenya coffee that was already ground up.

I had the Kenya coffee beans because I am a huge fan of the CoffeeHouse mystery series by Cleo Coyle, and in one of those books, it exclaimed how wonderful and awesome Kenya coffee is. I had never had any Kenya coffee, so I had to get some just to see how good it really is. It was kind of hard finding Kenya coffee (maybe the town I'm in is a little too small to find certain things), but I finally found some in Target, after checking all the grocery stores and the coffee shops. And it wasn't expensive at all. And Kenya coffee is indeed good.

But, this review is not for Kenya coffee. It is for the red Mr. Coffee Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System.

I give this product five stars because it works beautifully and easily. I was a little worried at first, because I am not too good at anything mechanical, but this coffee grinder is very easy and simple to use; therefore, even the mechanically-challenged can used it with no problems at all.

The shape was similar to my old Mr. Coffee burr grinder, so at first disappointed it was a blade unit. However, this is well designed and thought out. You have to hold down the top until the timer stops the grinding. Good uniform grind. The bowl unit and top remove for cleaning under water, hooray, no more oily stinky coffee grinder. Note the align marks on the side to easily replace bowl and top. AT first I just spun it around to get it in place, but looking at the color notches makes it easy. Like it.

So this grinder works consistently. I've never had trouble with motor, grind quality, etc. However, it's features (# of cups, grind quality) don't seem to make a difference. No matter the setting, you must still hold down the button until it reaches your desired consistency--so nothing automatic about it. Not a big problem there but the cup that hold the beans/grounds is cumbersome. There are little plastic ribs that do not remove and consequently all the grounds get caught in between. If you bang it on the side of the brew basket, grounds fly everywhere. The lid also gets in the way when trying to dump out the grounds. Since the lid doesn't detach, it flops awkwardly or re-latches creating yet another mess. On the bright side, I've had it over a year and use it whenever my preferred grinder dies. In fact, it was re-gifted to me because the previous owner didn't like it either! I like the Hamilton Beach hands-free grinder, but it only lasts about 6 months.

I can say that it has really improved my morning espressos. Having the ability to grind the coffee myself right before I pull a shot has improved the quality and consistency of my lattes. The Rocky does a great job with the grinding and with the doser, I haven't had too much problem with "dust". It's build is of a fairly high quality- plastic could be a bit heftier, but with a little care it should last me many many years, and it turns out great coffee grounds. Well worth the money even though it is not cheap. I use a La Pavoni hand pump machine, and it has never turned out as good a shot as I can now obtain with the combination of it with the Rocky.

I bought this for my mother, and so far have been very happy with it. It is very quiet and we have no problems getting whatever grind we desire. However we do not make espresso at home so I am not sure whether this grinder would do a fine enough grind for espresso, but for mom's drip coffeemaker it does just fine. It is small though, and for a really big pot I have to grind two batches. Despite it's size it seems very sturdy and I was so suprised at how quiet it was compared to my own Capresso Cool Grind or my Cuisinart burr mill. Unlike the previous reviewer I have had no static problems. All the coffee mills I have tried have some sort of static "cling", but not enough to cause me any problems. All in all a very decent blade grinder for the price.

I bought this grinder when I accidentally purchased whole beans. I have had bad results with it each time I used it. In fact, I was beginning to think that my coffee maker was not working properly - that it was having problems pumping the water through. But, with a little investigation, aka, I stopped using the grinder and switched back to already grounded coffee beans, I realized that it was the grinder's error, and my machine was just fine.

Each time I used the grinder, I tried to get my results to work properly. And, I've used it many, many times, having gone through a couple bags of coffee beans, but each time I use it, I end up with one of two results.

First, the bean don't grind enough and the water has difficulty passing through the beans into the pot. Second, the beans are ground too finely, and the water has difficulty passing through into the pot. I have never been able to find the perfect consistency of the beans.

I do not recommend this coffee grinder. Spend your money on something that will work properly.

I loves this grinder. I don't remember when I got it, but it was more than 3 years ago for sure. It works great as other good reviews say. One thing I would like to add. Grinding "dry" coffee beans (the milder roasted coffee beans appear drier) can cause inconsistency in the grind because some of the coffee coarse grind sticks to the side. My solution is tapping the plastic cover of the grinder when it's grinding to force the coffee grind to fall. It works. Considering that I've tapped this machine for more than 3 years, I'm surprised that it lasts this long. Now one of the plastic locking pieces on the cover came off. No surprise. The grinder still works, but I need to hold the cover to lock it in place. I'm going to buy this grinder again for sure.

I don't have a lot to go on since this is my first grinder. I will say it is much more quiet than the one I grew up hearing my father boot up in the am (which was one of the features I rate high). I first read about the grinder on America's Test Kitchen, which rated it as a top choice (however, the review was several years old). However, amazon offered fresh top reviews. It has been an enormous improvement over the pre-ground coffee we were using. For those thinking about a grinder, pre-ground coffee taste is a joke compared to fresh ground coffee. It's easy to use, looks nice and streamline/european (if that matters to you), and the easy roll up cord in the base is a great feature. Test Kitchen said to grind for about 30 seconds, in 5-10 second bursts, to avoid overheating the beans. We use beans from Costco and a 2 year old Mr. Coffee. I'm planning to buy a Krups when we retire this one, which is the better coffee maker based on research and my taste tests.

I didn't have an issue with the grind time like some other reviewers did. And some other reviewers didn't like that it left grounds at the bottom--my solution to this to hold the grinder upside down and run the machine a few seconds.

Pro: Lid is easy to get off, doesn't stick

I'm disappointed with this product.

I've only been using this grinder for a week with my Aeropress brewer so I'll keep it short... and yes, I purchased it because of the Cooks Illustrated recommendation.

It's noisy. The motor/bearing assembly seem to be cheaply constructed as it oscillates between a semi-smooth whirring and a nasty vibration sound while grinding.

It's slow. I bought the Krups 203 today to compare grind speed and consistency side by side... no contest. A 20 second grind using identical amounts of identical beans in each grinder yields a MUCH finer grind with the Krups. Grind consistency in both was close enough I suppose but the Krups grind looked more uniform, probably because it was finer.

This also brings up the point of the "cool grind" feature. It seems to me that you are negating any benefit if you have to grind twice as long (which heats up the beans more) to achieve the same consistency as the Krups.

The Krups motor also feels more powerful and it certainly runs more smoothly and has a more precise feel.

I'll wait a while to actually review the Krups officially but the Capresso was a disappointment and is going back to Amazon.

OK... I added a star to the review... here's why...

The Capresso makes a superior TASTING cup of coffee compared to the Krups!

After using the Krups to actually make coffee I noticed a strange, chalky aftertaste/film left in my mouth by the Krups ground coffee. This is using the same beans I was using with the Capresso and trying many different grind times and coffee amounts, the funky taste was still there.

In disbelief I pulled the Capresso out of it's return box and made a cup with it... the funk was gone... wow.

Something about the higher RPM, more power, and/or blade profile of the Krups is not doing fresh coffee beans justice and I probably never would have caught this had I not tried both grinders.

I am still not happy with the QUALITY of the Capresso grinder so it will be returned (along with the Krups) but I have learned a valuable lesson about coffee taste being VERY noticably affected by the grinder and if this is the case, I have no choice but to try a burr grinder.

I can't comment on the coffee canister as I don't have that product.

I don't recommend any blade grinder for making espresso grounds, period. Stop here if you're making espresso, cappucino, or lattes, and get a high quality burr grinder.

Okay, for grinding coarse coffee for drip, French press (?), or percolator coffee makers, this is a pretty darn good grinder. I've had mine for years, it is relatively quiet (more so than cheaper Krups or Melitta grinders), and does not get hot. The well and the top are easy enoug to clean out, and the substantial shape makes it easy to hold on the counter. Of course, the cord wrap storage in the base is a must-have, makes storing in the cabinet a cinch.

It has a good safety switch so you don't grind off fingers, but there's a small drawback. The top is circular, unlike that of my old reliable Braun grinder, so you may have to spin the top to line up the safety switch. I've gotten used to this and it presents no problem. (The Braun has a flat facet on the top where the switch is, so you cannot insert the top without lining it up right, and the switch is automagically lined up.)

You can clean the top easily in the sink with a horsehair brush and gentle soap, or RINSE ONLY in your dishwasher.

This is a very-well made, high-quality brush. The "natural fiber" bristles are dense & soft. I have not had it long enough to speak to its longevity, but it is all I expected and more from a relatively inexpensive little coffee grinder brush. There are a lot of negative reviews, which tells me that the key thing in getting this grinder is managing your expectations. I gave it 5 stars and I stick by it.

First, Yes... it is small. I use a French press and make enough coffee for two cups. This is perfect and then some. If you want a grinder that is for much larger pots, then this is not the right grinder for you.

ALSO, if you are retarded, then you won't quite understand why the lid is circular with one flat section. That will particularly be the case if you bought this thinking you were going to grind coffee adequate for a 10 cup pot.

So why is this a 5 star coffee grinder?

BECAUSE of the design. If you are using this for small pots of coffee, then you will realize that the flat portion allows for you to set the grounds down. It also makes POURING the grinds easier somehow. I have a grinder with a flat top and the grounds don't quite fall out as nicely as they do out of this rounded top. I think it has to do with how coffee grains fill into corners.

ALSO, the windy cord thing, though a it takes a bit of getting use to, is a wonderful feature for storage.

The last reason I would recommend this has to do with my favorite technique for getting all the grounds out into the lid. I usually turn the grinder upside down and hit the grinder 1 more time so that the grinding/wind moves all the grounds from the grinder into the lid. I tried this with a more typically designed grinder and had far more grounds stay in the grinder.

Highly recommended for coffee or cinnamon sticks. I have had mine for over 5 years and it is still kicking.

I have had this grinder for TWO YEARS now. After three other grinder and YEARS of frustration with lousy coffee and lousy grinders, this is by far, the only one I will ever own.
Yes- the label on the upper bin is off center (who cares)
Yes - the gasket on the upper bin lid is too small. Other reviewers say that kitchen aid has a replacement but I usually only grind what I need for one pot or two days of espresso and put it in a separate sealed container anyway. Also, the Empire Red is an older model and it has been fixed in the newer ones.
I have found it VERY easy to take a part and clean with the included brush. When I reassemble, I try to tighten the same as last time so I can use the same numbers. One trick is to grind a few tablespoons of espresso at your normal setting and place it on some white paper before you start. Once you finish, grind again and compare. Adjust the knobs a touch until the 'before grind' and the 'after grind' look really close. After two years of cleaning it every two months, it takes me about 10 minutes.
If this EVER did break down, I would be on Amazon ordering a new one the same day - NO HESITATION, NO SHOPPING.
Do yourself a favor, stop surfing, click add to cart, and go clean your coffee maker - you'll love this.

This product has worked well for me for over 3 years. One downside: it produces a fine dust which gets stuck to the inside of the grinds compartment. This wad of coffee dust needs to be avoided when dumping the grinds into your pot or maker, otherwise you'll over-extract your coffee, clog your filter or add sludge.

For the money, I can't complain, and it's at least better than a blade grinder.

I just have to add my review even thought it is a repeat of so many others. Here is a great, longer review that sounds exactly like the problems we've had:

For the first month we had this (got it as a gift so at least it was free) it worked "ok." It creates a huge mess, though, and you spend as much time cleaning coffee grounds up off the counter as you do grinding coffee.

After a month, though, it started smoking. This was the first time we ran into the grinder clogging up. It was so clogged that the grounds were a think, molasses type of mess. There's no easy way to get in to the bottom of the grinder to clean it up, but we managed after some struggle and mess. The very next use - it was all gummed and jammed up again! This thing is not easy to clean, does not work well, and has been very frustrating. Save your money and buy something else.

Inexpensive for a burr mill, but not worth it - Lost Viking -
Like another reviewer on here, I purchased this item at Target. My first thought upon seeing it was "Wow, this is the cheapest burr mill I've ever seen!". Turns out I was correct in more ways than one. This is not a good grinder. My gripes with it are as follows:

I purchased it primarily for making espresso, and the finest setting is not fine enough. Espresso came out weak. It was an ok coarseness for drip coffee if that's what you plan to use it for, but I recommend that espresso drinkers look elsewhere. Also, the coarse settings aren't that much coarser than the fine settings.

It has the most inconsistent grind of any burr mill I've ever seen. On the finest setting I got everything from fine dust to quarters of beans, with the average grain size a bit coarser than table salt. Grinding more beans at once (5+ cups worth) seems to help this somewhat, but it doesn't remove the problem completely. Also, I'm only making coffee for myself. Having to grind that much and then save some for later defeats the purpose of grinding your own coffee in the first place.

The noise this thing makes didn't bother me as much as other reviewers, but it still wasn't pleasant. Also, having to hold in the button was irritating.

Cleaning this unit is difficult. The ground coffee container, lid, and top half of grinder can be removed and cleaned in the sink, but a lot of coffee collects down inside where it is quite difficult to remove with the provided brush. Also, fine coffee dust collects in the chute where the coffee exits the grinder. I have also found this somewhat difficult to remove. I suspect that if I kept this unit long enough, there would be enough dust collecting and spoiling to affect the taste of the fresh coffee coming through.

Overall, I'm very disappointed with this thing. It's going back to Target later today, and my quest for an effective, reasonably priced grinder will continue.

I bought this coffee maker after looking at several. The Kalorik won me over by it's use of better plastics than the others. Capresso has the name but they use flimsy materials. This beefy beast should last a while. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars in the rating is that out of the box, the auto feature didn't work. I opened it up and was amazed at the technology going on inside. The rascal turned out to be a plug that got pulled out (had to be at the factory) and there was another just about ready to come off of the circuit board. Yes, I said circuit board. This is not your typical cheapee coffee maker. I simply plugged the one back in and pushed the other all the way on. Put it back together, and whamo, coffee. The only thing Kalorik should do is re-evaluate their plug/harness situation. Inside that machine is so well made, I'm still impressed. There are two brewing elements, that explains it's speed. Hopefully, if one ever fails the other will be able to still limp along. People that purchase it and complain, aren't reading the manual. Go back to your cheap ass coffee makers, you're not ready for this advanced machine. As far as the hot plate turning off when the carafe is taken off of it, that's called being GREEN people. So get used to it. I will agree with one complaint I have read, the carafe isn't the greatest, there is always a tiny bit of coffee left inside, but hey, you need to rinse it out at least! The display is dim but unless you keep the machine on all day, who cares. Most people have a minimum of 3 clocks in your kitchen anyway. (Count them, I bet you do!) It's bright enough to read but not from across the room.
The technology is SUPERB in this machine, I hope mine lasts many years, & only time will be able to judge that. If you're not ready for the sensors or if you set the grinder so fine that you need to use the tool provided for cleaning it out once in a while, then pass this one by. For the true coffee lover that enjoys a strong cup of coffee, you're home baby!

I bought this coffee maker because I was replacing a combination grinder/coffee maker that was difficult to clean and I wanted a similar product with easier maintenance. This coffee maker, no matter how I adjusted the grind and the number of cups, never ground enough coffee for anything other than colored water; I discovered that the chute which was supposed to carry the ground coffee to the basket for brewing was clogging up immediately, leaving a nearly empty brewing basket. In addition, each time you take the pot from the warming plate to fill your cup, the plate turns off; if you fail to push the button to turn the warming plate back on, the coffee will be cold (in spite of the thermal pot) when you want another cup. This item is far too expensive for what it delivers. I ended up buying a separate grinder. The item does have pretty blue lights, though.

Not for fine grind coffee - consumer -
The uneven coarse grind is OK for a French press, where the water will stay on the grind for a while. It is not acceptable for a drip coffee maker (especially the MoccaMaster), where the grind needs to be uniformly fine. The company was unable to offer any useful suggestions. Mine goes into the trash this week, after a year of trying.

As a grinder for drip or Aeropress, it's fine -- better than a blade grinder, for sure, creating smooth and fine grounds (but probably too fine for French press, even on the coarsest setting). The little timer knob on the front that controls how much it grinds sounds slightly silly but turns out to be a very useful tool.

BUT: ours expired after about 15 months of not-terribly-hard use... a "thermal fuse", they say, wired to the motor, that pops if it gets too warm in there. Ours ran slowly for a few seconds and then cut out altogether. It turns out this is a VERY common problem (just ask Google). Your options for replacing the fuse are: (1) Pop open the case using several screwdrivers (at once), great care, and steady hands (lest you break any of the many fragile little plastic tabs that hold the thing together), procure a new fuse from Radio Shack (if they happen to have one in stock), find and cut out the old fuse and solder in the new, and reassemble the case, or (2) ship it to an "Authorized Service Center" (at your expense, yes even if it's still under "warranty") and wait several weeks for it to come back.

Long story short, Krups, like so many other companies, ain't what they used to be. I won't buy anything with their name on it again. Life's too short to be messing around trying to repair cheap plastic landfill-fodder.

Okay, so you just can't help getting coffee on the counter with all that static. That didn't bother me too much over the course a full ten months and one week of its decent performance. The little button you turn it on with collapsed inside and you can't get into the unit to put it back. It's still under warranty, so I can drive to and from the nearest service center...just less than 65 miles (2 times). There are all of four authorized service centers in California! Wow, that is service! Or I can box it up, take it to the post office, pay to mail it, wait a year or two and hope I see it again. But...I guess I have to buy another grinder if I want coffee before spring. Save your money for something with a five star review.

Whoever the reviewer named Joyce Evans is, she has a real problem, and it isn't Champion. This reviewer has gone on Amazon and other review sites with the same misrepresentation: that Champion doesn't support its older juicers with parts.

The Plastaket company, owned by the same family from the beginning, introduced the Champion in 1955. It was the same, now classic, design, using a large and very powerful GE motor turning at ~1700rpm, as opposed to 3500-16,000 rpm on a centrifugal juicer. Looking at the juicer, the feed/chute part, the cutting cone and the screen are made of high-grade nylon as opposed to the cheaper and easier molded plastic on today's juicers. With use over the years, the molds for these parts simply wore out and new, visually identical parts were made. However, this is a precision machine and the new parts were different enough that they don't fit the very oldest juicers.

My Champion was purchased nearly 30 years ago. After reading this woman's entries here and elsewhere, I called up Plastaket. As with any juicer heavily used, the cutting mechanism will dull over time and should be replaced every few years. The entire assembly was still available for my juicer, as I expected. I spoke at some length with the company and brought up this woman's work online. The change in the parts was explained to me; they readily stated that their very oldest juicers don't have an inventory of parts.

I ask other readers: how many small appliance manufacturers keep parts past a very few years? What do readers think of the probability of getting new cutting baskets for all these Juiceman and LaLanne labeled juicers 10 years from now, much less 30 years from now? The only juicers that I know of with enough history to check, are Acme/Omega (they use the same cutter wheel, still readily available) and Norwalk (at least for most parts for this 00+ machine).

Though of course Ms. Evans doesn't bother to mention the age of the Champion to which she refers, re Plastaket it must be a very, very old model. This woman states on her profile that she is some type of 'professional' and 'educator'. This 1-star rating combined with her refusal or inability to even review the machine should nullify her review. I have no problem if this person doesn't like the machine--who knows what she is thinking? After seeing this very same, quite unfair byline on more than one juicer review site, I can't decide whether she's some type of Champion weirdo or just a nut.

I love this grinder, I hated grinding my own beans after a while since all the other grinders made such a mess, never ground enough coffee for a full pot without doing it twice or the ground coffee stuck to the grinder. This one has none of those problems.

I wanted to grind my beans each time and dump them into the grinder with no clean up after. This was my 4th attempt at doing that, the 3 previous grinders were not what I expected. I love this one and so does my husband. Even though after about 3 months our first one stopped working, that was no problem, we returned it for the exact same model and it has been great for over a year now, no problem. I had blindly registered for this item for my bridal shower thinking it would be okay. I have a lot of cuisinart products and i love them all (coffee maker, blender, pots) Cuisinart normally puts out a high quality product..but that is not the case w/ this grinder.

We've had it 4 months and had maybe used it 10 times before it burnt out. My husband was using it and about 1/2 way through the grind it started making a funny noise and then just stopped working. It also had a burning smell after that so we quickly unplugged it.

We had just started getting used to grinding our everyday coffee and love the flavor. I Recommend grinding your own coffee but definitely shop around before you decided on a grinder. I can't even return this one because it was purchased before Macys new crazy return policy and it doesn't have a return sticker on it.

The problem with stuck grinding cups on this model seems to come up frequently with units manufactured in 2007 and later. The motor still spins the blades, but one can't remove the cup to dump the contents or to clean it.

I think the problem is caused by the clutch mechanism not fully engaging. There's a plastic guide pin on the top of the motor shaft that goes into a mating hole in a brass bushing in the blade hub. If the parts aren't fully mated, the pin can spin in the brass bushing until it softens. Once that happens, and if the blade should settle so that the clutch fully engages, the plastic flows into the microscopic machining grooves in the brass and the two parts become locked together. It's a bad design, and could have been avoided if Cuisinart had tapered the plastic pin and hole in the brass bushing, much like the Jacobs taper on an industrial drill press spindle.

It's possible to get the stuck parts apart, but it involves disassembling the motor base to gain access to the slot in the bottom end of the motor shaft. (Unplug the unit first!) The base cover is held in place by six (6) screws, four of which are hidden under the adhesive rubber footpads. Note that the four footpad screws are different from the remaining two screws. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the slot in the shaft, grasp the blade hub with a rag or piece of paper towel, and with the help of an assistant twist the shaft back and forth while pulling on the blade hub firmly and steadily until it comes off the shaft.

Reassemble the motor base. Then, with a matchstick or toothpick, depress the motor switch to spin the shaft. Using the blunt edge of a small snap-blade utility knife, gently scrape the plastic motor shaft pin, much as one would work a wood turning lathe. Check the fit of the brass blade hub frequently until it just slips onto the pin without resistance. Take care while scraping to avoid cutting grooves into the plastic pin.

Thereafter, before loading the cup and running the grinder, make sure the clutch is fully engaged by pushing the blade hub down with your finger.

As other reviewers have noted, the unit may produce unsatisfactory results when grinding coffee beans. I think this is due to excessive clearance between the blades and the bottom of the grinding cup. I have an older Krups Model 208A grinder, with a somewhat smaller capacity and fixed grinding cup, and its blades are noticeably lower in the cup. The Cuisinart has bent-down blade tips, as does the Krups, evidently intended to provide a stirring action, but it isn't enough. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I use the grinder only for small grain products, such as flax seed, and it works fine for this purpose.

To start with the good, the grinding performance is great. It does an even grind making the coffee come out great, so it is great at what it does. The only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is the timer knob seems a bit off. For example, I make 8 cups of coffee every morning (Bunn coffee maker). I put in 6 scoops (teaspoons?) of beans, but I just turn it to 4 cups on the grinder and it grinds all the beans and then runs a few seconds more. Perhaps it's the grind setting I have it on or something, but it's not really a problem anyway. As far as what you get for the money, this is a great value and I would highly recommend it.

I've had this coffee grinder for almost 8 years and it's terrific. I've ground anything, that will fit in the bowl, at one time or other and it has never failed to do what I've asked of it. I use it exclusively for coffee for the last 7 years or so and I make at least a 12 cup pot each day. It's never given a hiccup. After I grind the beans I find grounds sometimes stick to the bowl bottom. When this happens I simply turn the whole thing over and bang the entire unit on the counter top to dislodge most of the particles. The rest I remove with a small brush that I've dedicated to the job. Even with all the banging on the counter top it has never shown the slightest sign of getting lose or any damage. I personally think that mine is built like a tank. I love it and unless you're a total coffee "snob"...so will you...

Let me start out be saying that Capresso's customer service has been top notch. I have had to call their number twice since getting my grinder. Once the burr got jammed into the grinder and I could not get it out. They talked me through how to release it. The other time the unit just stopped working. They had me sent it in to them (just the base), send me a UPS shipping label so I didn't have to pay a penny for shipping either way (computer RMA departments usually make you pay at least one way) and ended up shipping me an entirely new unit. I was expecting just the base to be replaced but they sent me a totally new unit still in the box with all of its pieces. So now I have a backup burr and the plastic pieces.

Next I wanted to explain to skeptics why you should pay for this instead of the a cheap blade grinder. There are several things to consider when brewing coffee. The freshness of the bean, grind size, how uniform the grind is, brewing method, etc. First, if you are buying preground coffee stop now. Do some research, find a bean you like and grind it yourself. Freshness matters. Exposure to air matters. If you wonder why the stuff at the coffee houses tastes so much better that is a major reason why. Next grind size having it be uniform. When you brew coffee you are basically doing the same thing that happens when you steep tea or throw spices or dry herbs into boiling water. You are extracting flavors, infusing them into the water. Think of brewing as steeping if you are a tea drinker. The finer the grind, the more surface area touching the hot water, the faster the flavor is extracted. If it is too fine of a grind you run the risk of giving off a bitter flavor, kind of like how tea from tea dust (often used in tea bags) is a bit bitter while tea from larger leaves is a bit smoother. If it is too coarse, the coffee will take a long time brew properly and in the process may give you flavors you don't want.

So you need a machine that can give you control over the size and make sure all of the grounds are uniform. If you are aiming for a coarse grind in a blade grinder, chances are some of the coffee on the bottom will get broken up far smaller and you may get a bitter flavor. Burr grinders give a far more uniform size. The 9 size settings means you control the size. I use a french press which requires a fairly coarse grind (too fine and the grounds would simply slip threw the screen). Someone else may want a finer grind for their espresso. Maybe your coffee is starting to get a bit older and is losing some of its flavor but isn't quite stale yet. You'd probably want a finer grind. This machine takes care of that.

So why this one? I already explained the customer service. And this one is fairly sturdy for the price, has quite a few different size settings so it will do just about anything a person would want for at home. It is fairly easy to clean up and does not take up much shelf space. If you are the kind of person that wants a real cup of espresso then you may want to go higher end. If you are someone that has always used preground coffee you will be surprised to see how much better it is by making that one change. If you have used a blade grinder, you'll be surprised how much easier it is to get a good grind from a burr. Using my old blade grinder (now known as my spice grinder) I had a method to get a decent grind. I would grind for 10 seconds while shaking pretty hard. Then I would pulse it a few times after tapping it down. With this machine I can measure out what I need (usually 1tbsp beans to 1C water) and let it do the work, come back a few seconds later and it is ready to go.

Make sure to clean it regularly. Burr grinders have a bit of an issue with static. The grounds can be hard to remove. Also don't store your beans in the top. Store them in your fridge in air tight containers (preferably not plastic since plastic absorbs flavors... including stale coffee flavors). You can store beans in the freezer but keep them in a spot where they won't be warming up every time you open the door. Generally if I'm ordering 1 lb of beans (about 4-6 weeks supply for me)I will store it in the fridge. Anything beyond the first pound I will put in the freezer. If you leave them at room temperature they may go stale or even rancid quickly. You may want to invest in a can of compressed air which you can probably find at an electronics store. Just make sure to stand outside and aim the machine away when you blow into it. I found that one out the hard way once.

The burr grinder definitely grinds more evenly than my old Capresso. Whether that affects the taste is really hard to tell. I think what it does is makes the taste more consistent. Sometimes with my old grinder and Mr. Coffee, the taste was great; sometimes not so much. Now it's quite good all the time. Is it worth the extra cost? Well, I wanted something classy for my newly remodeled kitchen, so I'm pleased. I wouldn't throw out your regular coffee grinder, however, and replace it with the burr grinder, if all you're looking for is improved taste.

The coffee grinds perfect for my gold filter; just fine enough. Yes, there's static; I just dump the grounds out the curved side of the coffee container then rap the container on the counter and dump the rest. As for the grinder retaining a lot of coffee, yes it does. But after thoroughly cleaning it, the "retained" coffee is made up of bean pieces and very coarse grounds - nothing like the rest of the coffee in the container. I think it just drops from the grinding burr and stays in the gaps in the machine; it never makes it into the coffee container. So I quit worrying about it and don't clean the machine so often. Enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee, flavorful and not bitter. Highly recommended!

I've had several electric burr grinders from other manufacturers which failed within a month of purchase. One grinder would spontaneously start grinding in the middle of the night. This grinder will quickly grind enough beans for full 12 cup pot of strong black coffee. We drink coffee a lot at my house. I have two of these grinders, both of which I acquired second hand for less than retail.

Yes there does exist some spillage and there are some tricks to using this grinder (of which I shall share), but with practice I think you shall find this to be your favorite grinder in your house.

Positives:
1. CHEAP and easy to use.
2. Grinds quick and efficiently.
3. Cord storage around base.
4. Doesn't use much counter space.
5. Use cap for measuring.

Minuses:
1. You can spill (I found this to be true with all grinders I've tried.)
2. Plastic cover over central nut on grinder blade will fall off and get ground in time (will not affect brew).
3. Not hands free.

Oh ya, I said that I'd share my secrets, well here they are:
1. To get a really fine even grind I shake the whole grinder while grinding. To do this hold and shake it like a martini shaker from old movies you've seen on TV while grinding. Make sure to keep the cap on however.
2. After grinding bang on the bottom of the grinder with the palm of your hand while holding the grinder upside down, take cap off slowly and put directly into your coffee pot filter. I find tapping the bottom lowers the amount of coffee trapped between the wall of the grinder and the cap.
3. If you are having a spillage problem simply remove cap over a paper plate or waxed paper. You can then take the spill and add it to your coffee basket of your coffee maker.
4. Lastly I fill the cap almost full to brew my morning coffee, and then simply put it all directly into the basket of the drip coffee maker.
5. If I am making espresso coffee I grind it longer and then put the coffee in a small coffee tin before scooping into my espresso machine.

Saved my best ones for last.
First, I never clean my coffee grinder, after all it is only going to have more coffee beans in it later.
Second, I have found that this grinder will chop nuts quite nicely with a little bit of practice to get the consistency you want. That is why I have two grinders. Plus in case one breaks I have the other in stand-by. :)

We used this KSM2 grinder for 3 years for spices only. Used it for about 20 grinds per year, or total of 60 times. When it stopped working the other day, I took it apart and discovered the problem. The micro switch extends about 5 inches into an area where is it secured by a very flimsy plastic part. This is, of course, the part that broke and the switch was rendered useless.
I will admit that the grinder did a very good job with spices. However, 60 uses does not qualify as a well made product.
For all the other reviewers who primarily use blade grinders for coffee beans and complain about dust and timing issues, I would highly recommend a burr-type coffee mill. Once you use one, you will never go back to a blade grinder.

I bought this grinder 3 years ago when my old one broke. I had no particular reason for buying this one over any other model, but I was very happy with it over the years. It grinds the coffee for a set amount of time, depending on the number of cups and type of grind selected (good for people who need coffee *before* attempting anything complex like estimating grinding time).

Two weeks ago I broke the grinder (I snapped a piece of the plastic while trying to clean it). No big deal - for a grinder under , getting 3 years of twice-daily use out of it seemed more than satisfactory. I went out to get a new one and bought whatever was on the shelf - after all, a grinder is a grinder. Or so I thought.

To my dismay, the new grinder catches half the grinds while spraying the other half all over the counter. After ensuring that it wasn't user error, I gave up and am ordering this grinder again. I can tolerate the noise (this is, after all, grinding coffee beans - not trying to lull them to sleep); I cannot tolerate coffee grinds all over my kitchen. This little grinder does what it should effectively and very easily, without the mess. Given that it costs under , I think that makes it a 5-star product.

This is a great coffee grinder for the price. It is not especially noisy, and it does a good job of grinding the beans. It has three settings, of which I have used 2: fine, which ground the coffee fine enough to use in my espresso maker; regular, which I haven't used but would assume would be perfect for a drip coffee maker; and course, which I use almost daily in combination with a French press. It also has 4 volume (quantity) settings, for the approximate number of cups you are making.

To say that fresh ground beans makes your coffee better would be like saying that a downpour makes the ground wetter; it does, but it does so much more than that. Fresh ground coffee opens up a whole new bouquet of flavors and aromas, and it also gives the coffee a little extra punch.

I am also considering purchasing a second one of these to grind spices, because I am quite sure this would handle that task very well.

Overall recommendation: strong buy!

I was going to buy just the average low cost grinder. I saw this one for a few dollars more and said what the heck. It was not a bad choice. So far after a few weeks it works great. The entire grinding chamber comes off making it easy to dump the coffee into the coffee maker. The self cleaning feature is helpful but does not eliminate regular manual cleaning. As long as it lasts I would buy another.

I was nervous about buying a manual coffee grinder as they ALL had negative reviews. But I really wanted one because a) I live in hurricane country and like to be able to function without power b) I like being "old school" and c) anything that I can do "off the [power] grid" is awesome to me. So I picked this one.

It comes with no directions, but it really needs none. There is a little thing that you turn to adjust the size of the grounds you make that you will need to turn to your liking before screwing on the handle. It's a pretty simple little thing, so just look at it and you'll figure it out.

Over a period of five years, I perfected my espresso shots using a La Pavoni conical burr grinder and a La Pavoni lever espresso machine. Went all the way around the bases by buying a coffee roaster and perfecting the blend and roast.

Then the bearings on my old La Pavoni burr grinder burned out. I replaced it with an Capresso grinder that got great reviews.

Big mistake. Tried using the Capresso for several months, and knew I wasn't where I needed to be when my barista son was here for a visit earlier this summer. All I had to see was the look on his face when I served him a shot with large, white bubbles instead of thich, rust-red crema. The shot was over-extracted and bitter.

So I got a Rancillio Rocky, and I CELEBRATE it every morning when the shots I spent five years learning to pull are reappearing in my cup.

This thing, as others have noted, is built like a tank. It's very quiet. It took me all of four shots to dial in the perfect grind for an everage day, and it's a snap to go one click or one click down if the weather gets drier or more humid.

Very solid and well built. The motor weighs 11-12 pounds out of 18 which is the total weight of the grinder. You really do not need a more expensive one for any machine. I have it with my Andreja Premium. It gives always consistant grind for espresso but I am not sure it is coarse enough for French Press. You get better results with a cheaper burr grinder for French Press. One very important note: Each coffee beans needs different set of grinding. I learned that the hard way to the extent I thought for a while there is some thing wrong with my machine. Thanks to CHRIS COFFEE they advised me to go much finer of my grind for the beans I was using. Normally with Lavazza and Illy beans you may set the grind at 10. I went to 6 and the bar pressure still brewing at 4. I had to go to 1 in order to have the bar pressure at 9-10. I concluded that the coffee beans I am using from Yemen were only good for Turkish coffee and not for espresso. So stick guys with Italian coffee as this will save you a lot of trouble.

This is my first burr grinder to go with my first home espresso machine the Rancilio Silvia (I've worked in a few espresso places over the years so am familiar with commercial machines).
the grinder works very well and can create whatever grind you will need from espresso to french press. In terms of grinding performance I'd give it ***** , however overall it has a few design features that are lacking:
1) beans get stuck in the screw holes inside the bean hopper/holder- so that you have to turn the grinder upside down and whack it to get the stuck beans out. I've read you can stick cut up pieces of foam earplugs into the holes- pretty cheesy.
2) the chute the ground coffee goes through is blue plastic. ugly, and I understand it can crack and break over time, stainless steel would seem better here
3) grounds spill out of the portafilter while filling regardless of technique. I think this may just be the way it is because you need to fill the portafilter slightly heaping prior to tamping. the placement of the removable portafilter holder seems a big high, forcing more grounds to spill, I'm finding I often use it without the holder.
So, I'd buy it again, but wish it was designed a bit bigger.
It seems absurdly expensive, but I don't know what to compare it to and it seems to work very well.

Great coffee grinder! I have tried several coffee grinders. All but the Cuisinart leave some beans unground and/or leave an annoying amount of residue in the grinder. Aesthetically pleasing style. Cord storage inadequate and awkward to use.

Possibly the worse coffee grinder around and I've owned three brands. The lid in engineered in such a way that the grinder can hold very little coffee. I have to grind in two batches. Design of the lid causes a mess when pouring into coffee pot...coffee grounds all over the counter. Grinds to a course coffee at best. Would run from this. I am very disappointed in Cuisinart.

I had this one as a back-up to my Starbucks Barista grinder which died when the blades broke. This one worked exactly two times. The second time it didn't even work that well. Most of the beans weren't ground. It feels cheap and was cheap. It came as a *bonus* with the Cuisinart coffeemaker we bought which also is a shoddy product. No more Cuisinart products in this household!

UPDATE: I contacted Cuisinart, and they are sending a replacement. I'm still wary, but I do appreciate the good customer service.

My old, trusted coffee grinder finally died and I picked this up as a replacement. At first I was really impressed at how it grinds automatically, and I still think it's a very cool function, but the lid is sometimes hard to lock and the button to start won't always work. This machine is a little tempermental. I have arthritis in my thumbs and sometimes locking the lid is difficult - I have to get it just right or the grinder won't auto-grind.

Once I do get the lid on properly and the button works, the coffee is ground very nicely to make a great pot of coffee and I do like the grinder. I think the locking lid is a bit of over kill and maybe the design could be a little easier to use. Once you put the beans in you select which brew you'd like and the grinder automatically goes on and grinds the beans for you. I have had no problems with having beans left over, the coffee beans always get ground properly to my setting so I have had no trouble with the grinding. It's just getting that darn lid on right-at times I have it locked and it still won't go and I have to take the lid off the locking and re-do it with my thumbs it can be a pain but I am happy with the quality of the coffee after it is ground.

Just what I needed - NEPA denizen - NE PA, United States
This grinder is just what I needed: a fast, easy way to grind beans fresh for every pot. I had one for about 6 months, dropped it on the floor of the kitchen and broke it, and was disconsolate until my husband was able to find another one.

I like a very very fine grind - no problem,
I like easy clean-up - no problem - just wipe out with a paper towel, I dislike cords - no problem, this one just winds right into the base.

I have had no trouble with the locking mechanism or the button.

I don't think it would actually grind enough coffee for a 15-cup pot, though (I usually only make 4-6 cups, so it's not an issue)

It's not at all the intended use, but I use this grinder to make nasal snuff tobacco from loose-leaf pipe tobacco, and my review is of that usage.

I'm very fond of the auto-pulse feature. The programs, while useful, can be overridden. The blade does not hold onto the ground product, as is frequently the case with other grinders. The lid is nice and transparent, and I can clearly see the coarseness of the grind without removing the lid. The retractable cord is great.

In my opinion, the negatives are that it's fairly loud, that the lid is somewhat difficult to lock and unlock (at least in my unit), and it runs a bit hot, which is a problem for tobacco, which is (slightly) more sensitive than coffee beans to heat.

As I noted, it's an off-label use, but I would recommend this to other snuff takers.

Impossible to Open - Don -
I bought this for my wife. She has Rheumatoid arthritis and cannot hold down a grinder. We bought this one because it grinds hands free. Problem is, she cannot turn the top to unlock it. If you have problems opening a jar lid or have problems with your hands this is not your grinder. Other than that it is five stars.

I save so much time with this machine! In less than 5 seconds I can grind a cup of pecans to such minute pieces...normally would have taken me over five minutes to accomplish the same. Need to get another as backup for years in the future when I burn this one out!

My only problem is the blade slipped down in the disposal without my knowledge...yep, you guessed it! I am having trouble finding replacement. However, the cost is so inexpensive that to purchase another appliance isn't too bad.

grinder cup cracks with use - Jedi mom, in VA - VA USA
I have had the spacemaker coffee grinder for about 6 mos. The grinder cup showed signs of cracks at about 4 - 6 weeks. It now has a hole in the side from the result of the cracks. This has NOT been abused in use. And has never been used for anything else but coffee beans. I like the design, but I hope I can find a grinder cup replacement. Which I hope lasts longer.

The grinder is not bad, but I wish the motor speed was higher so it will gring finer. Also, the platic bowl is starting to crack after only one wash in the upper rack of the dishwasher.
